Shida Kartli State Representative Giorgi Khojevanishvili and Director General of the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation Nika Antidze inspected the ongoing archaeological works at Surami Castle. This kind of large-scale archaeological excavations are for the first time on medieval castle. The project includes the following stages: archaeological study, preparation of a rehabilitation project based on archaeological findings, and the castle rehabilitation based on the rehabilitation project.
“The launch of archaeological and later rehabilitation works at Surami Castle is a step forward in increasing the tourism potential of the Shida Kartli region. We were still here in February and planned the works to be implemented on Surami Castle. The urban-type settlement of Surami is a resort area, so it is necessary to arrange its historical and cultural sites for its development. The project comprises several phases, after which local and foreign tourists will benefit from the upgraded infrastructure,’’- said the State Representative.
